What is a definition of "Popular"? I guess there are three possibilities: films that were popular with the public, a popularity reflected in high boxoffice returns, such as Cecil B. De Mille's "Samson and Delilah"; films that were popular with the critics, but failed to galvanize a boxoffice stampede: "The Ox-Bow Incident", for example; and films that won awards from motion picture industry bodies such as The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, such as "In Which We Serve". Of course, many films detailed in this book satisfy all three requirements: awards, public popularity and critical endorsement. "Mrs Miniver", "How Green Was My Valley", "Mildred Pierce", "Fantasia", "Anchors Aweigh", "The Talk of the Town", "Song of the South", "The Rains Came", "The Keys of the Kingdom", "Its a Wonderful Life!" etc.
