About the Author

Brian C. Leutholtz, PhD, FACSM, received his BS in dietetics from Michigan State University in 1985, his MS in exercise physiology from Michigan State University in 1987, and his PhD in clinical exercise physiology from Michigan State University in 1992. Dr. Leutholtz completed a 4-year clinical fellowship in clinical cardiology at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan. As a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), he has earned the highest certification given by the ACSM as a clinical program director. Dr. Leutholtz is a professor at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. He was recruited by Baylor to improve their graduate curriculum and begin the development of a PhD program by teaching and creating new courses at the graduate level in sports nutrition and exercise prescription for special populations. Dr. Leutholtz has past experience as the director and founder of the Old Dominion University Therapeutic Exercise Program for Chronic Disease (TEMPO) in Norfolk, Virginia, and has served as a consultant for an aggressive managed care team providing exercise and diet evaluation/education in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He is currently the coordinator for the exercise physiology graduate program at Baylor University. Dr. Leutholtz has recently added a coauthored second edition book, Exercise Prescription: A Case Study Approach to the ACSM Guidelines, to his list of book publications. The book has been translated into Japanese, Korean, and Chinese. In this book, the long-standing ACSM equations were enhanced and a new term, "VO2 reserve," was adopted by the ACSM. Ignacio Ripoll, MD, FACP, FACCP, is associate professor of internal medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School and medical director of the Respiratory Therapy and School of Polysomnography Technology at Tidewater Community College. He is also an adjunct professor of exercise physiology at Old Dominion University in Norfolk Virginia. He is a member of Bayview Physicians, a multidisciplinary medical group, and practices pulmonary, sleep, and bariatric medicine in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He has a particular interest in the fields of cardiopulmonary physiology, sleep medicine, and the evaluation and management of the metabolic syndrome.
