Suitable for undergraduate and postgraduate students in amenity and general horticulture.
Ross Cameron is an Environmental Horticulturalist and Director of
Research at the Department of Landscape Architecture, University of
Sheffield.
His research interests centre around urban green infrastructure and
climate change mitigation, with a strong emphasis on optimising
plant species choice with respect to ecosystem function and
services (city cooling, thermal insulation, flood tolerance,
biodiversity enhancement and influence on human health and
well-being).
He is interested in identifying those plant species robust enough
to tolerate urban conditions (both current and future), whilst
meeting their specifications for performance. Recent studies
include investigations into the insulation effects of roof garden
plants, and how small-scale plant communities influence human
well-being and provide restoration from physiological stress.
The book focuses on providing a general idea of the importance of vegetation, not only in our urban spaces, but also in our homes. It thoroughly covers two main aspects of horticultural science: the positive benefits of horticulture and the conservation of biodiversity in our environment. What's more, there's a whole chapter dedicated solely to green walls, green roofs, and rain gardens, making this book the ultimate guide to eco-friendly living for everybody. Why should you read the book? This book covers the topic of horticulture in a way that allows everybody to find a topic that is relevant and interesting. Not only is it packed with useful definitions -- enriching our professional vocabulary -- but it is also full of colorful, eye-pleasing pictures depicting the plants used in cities. This is NOT yet another boring student's book where we're being presented with dry theory and no practical tips.--Melvin Morey
