Reviews

'This is one of the richest collections of essays that I have read in years...It is essential reading.' Edmund De Waal, 'Crafts' 'This is a timely collection that fills an important gap in our archive of the body. Readers and students across many disciplines will find it useful in making sense of a rapidly growing field of knowledge.' Veit Erlmann, Endowed Chair of Music,School of Music, University of Texas at Austin 'I have long been waiting for a book, and a book series, such as this exploring in depth the manifold sensuous dimensions of human experience from an interdisciplinary perspective.' Christopher Tilley, Professor of Anthropology, University College London 'David Howes has compiled an impressive volume of old and new contributions from a range of disciplines that form a solid basis for further work in the field of sensous scholarship.' Jo Tacchi, Queensland University of Technology, in 'International Journal of Cultural Studies' "Empire of the Senses' is a long awaited introduction to the senses in the social sciences and humanities. ... It is essential reading for any student of sensory aspects of culture and experience and provides a very useful introduction to the field for any researcher who wants to engage with this very important area of scholarly attention.' Sarah Pink, Social Anthropology 'This volume is a fascinating read for those interested in analyses and debates on the senses in everyday life in historical and contemporary milieus.' Kelvin E. Y. Low, International Sociology Review of Books, Vol. 22, No. 2 'Chapters are cannily selected to make connections and drive readers to their sources; the introduction provides overall theoretical framing and contextualization within a broad academic literature; and the organizational structure, with excellent section introductions and a final 'Sensory bibliography', makes it a terrific teaching and reference tool. ... I came out of this reading with senses all agog: I could smell better, see better, taste better, feel better.' Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, Vol 14, No 2, June 2008 'Howes has gathered a rich collection that evidences the direct importance for the social sciences of this new wave of sensuous scholarship.' Mark Paterson, University of Exeter
