About the Author

Leslie Whitehead originally wrote the story of Fred and Mack as a way to boost her son Jay's confidence and self-esteem with very simple messages: "Be proud of the person you are, no matter your differences or obstacles." "Always try your best." "Working as a team is important." She understands the many challenges associated with raising a child with learning disabilities. From navigating the maze of health professionals to get a clear understanding of Jay's diagnosis and the best treatment options for a healthy outcome, as well as pushing the school system to ensure he received the best education possible, Leslie learned very early: "You are your child's only and best advocate." In 1988, Leslie earned her Associates Degree in Medical Assisting from Austin Health Career Institute. She has worked in the Medical and Home Health Industry for many years. Leslie and husband Ronnie have been married for 30 years. They live in Austin, Texas, Jay, Cruiser the dachshund, and Roscoe the pitbull, and are still working as a team. Jay is now employed and well on his way to becoming an independent, productive adult.
