[Tom Biederbeck] Here at Felt & Wire, we're used to people telling
us about their experiences with the printed page -- sometimes in
the most intimate terms (we are "paper-obsessed," but not in that
way). So it's with mild incredulity and a sense of "here's an idea
whose time has come" that we greet the arrival of Paper Passion, a
perfume with the aroma of a freshly printed book.
Paper Passion is by perfumer Geza Schoen, Gerhard Steidl and
Wallpaper* magazine, with packaging by Karl Lagerfeld and Steidl.
Reportedly, Gerhard Steidl was inspired by Lagerfeld to consider
the intoxication that the aroma of books brings upon
bibliophiles.
"The smell of a freshly printed book is the best smell in the
world." -- Karl Lagerfeld
Wallpaper* commissioned the fragrance for its exhibition Handmade,
in Milan, Italy. "You have a book, you open it, there's a bottle
inside and it smells of a book," says Schoen. "It might be quirky,
but the idea has a simplicity, a linearity."
The package includes commentary from Karl Lagerfeld, Gunter Grass,
Schoen and Tony Chambers. Buy it here decide later if it works best
at your literary salon, in your library, or bedside.

Item of the Day: Paper Passion
If you've stood anywhere near me recently, and heard the gentle
whisper of, "My precious, my precious " on the wind, it's for good
reason.
There is a book perfume in the world, gentle readers! A perfume
that smells of freshly printed pages and ink and all my favorite
things in a bottle.
I want it so much I can hardly stand it. It consumes my thoughts
almost as much as the incredible novel I'm reading right now.
Paper Passion is the name of this lovely new fragrance. It's a
collaboration from perfumers Geza Schoen, designer Gerhard Steidl
and Wallpaper* magazine, and it's packaging was designed by Karl
Lagerfeld and Steidl.
I haven't caved and bought any yet because it's pricey and I'm
unemployed, but it is the first thing on my wish list! If anyone
gets some, report on its awesomeness immediately.

Paper Passion Perfume by Geza Schoen, Gerhard Steidl and Wallpaper*
Magazine, with Packaging by Karl Lagerfeld
Books aren't exactly the same thriving medium they once were, but
that doesn't mean they've lost their appeal in the hearts of
diehard readers around the world. Paper Passion Perfume is a new
scent by Gerhard Steidl and Geza Schoen that encapsulates the
attempt to bottle the fragrance of books to sell as, you guessed
it, perfume. The packaging and presentation for this unique project
has been spearheaded by legendary designer Karl Lagerfeld -- a
self-professed lover of books. The fragrance is being tailored to
meet the upcoming "Handmade" exhibition in Milan for Wallpaper*
Magazine. You can try the fragrance for yourself by purchasing it
from Steidl here for $115 USD. May we recommend spraying your iPad
or Kindle with it before each reading session?

Paper Passion Perfume: Book in a Bottle, Bottle in a Book!
As you know, I love to read. Duh. I also love scents. As I admitted
in 25 Random Things About Me, "Smell good, and I'll follow you
anywhere." My own signature scent is Pure Grace by Philosophy, but,
really, there's nothing I like better than the smell of a new book.
In fact, it's one reason I still don't have an e-Reader.
So, when I received Paper Passion in the mail the other day, it
literally took my breath away. Created by boutique perfumer Geza
Schoen and esteemed publisher/printer Gerhard Steidl in
collaboration with Wallpaper* magazine, Paper Passion is described
as "Perfume for Booklovers."
The scent is lovely and comforting - taking a whiff, I felt very
much at home - but the packaging blew me away. Just look at it! The
gorgeous little hardcover book opens up to short essays and poems
by Karl Lagerfeld, Nobel Laureate Gunter Grass, Geza Schoen and
Tony Chambers (editor of Wallpaper*), all paying tribute to the
scent of paper. And then, you turn the last white page of text and,
be still my heart, there are maybe a couple of hundred glorious red
pages with a hidden cut-out compartment housing the bottle. I'm in
love.
If you're looking for a special gift for a book lover, trust me,
this is it. It is a stunning and sensuous tribute to paper, and you
just may want to dab a drop or two on the pulse points of your
Kindle.
