Walter R. Brooks's "pig for all seasons," Freddy, now stars in his own book of aphorisms, The Wit & Wisdom of Freddy and His Friends, a compilation of excerpts from all 26 Freddy books (originally published between 1932 and 1958, and currently being reissued by Overlook). Some are pithy: On a page headed "On lying in the bed you made," Freddy is quoted as saying, "That's the trouble with a reputation for bravery: you have to live up to it." Others are fanciful: "Cats very seldom make promises, but when they do... their word is as good as their bond." Illustrations by Kurt Wiese dress up most of the spreads, and an introduction by Michael Cart offers an appreciation of Freddy and his creator. Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
