Performer Notes
  • The Temptations were arguably the greatest act in the history of Motown, performing sweet (and bittersweet) Pop as well as politically-informed Funk with equal finesse and flair. This budget-priced compilation assembles the highlights of their long and lustrious career, including "My Girl," "Papa Was a Rolling Stone," "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," "Get Ready," "Just My Imagination (Running Awaw With Me)," and 12 more.
  • A British import released by the Wise Buy label, The Best of the Temptations includes 18 Temptations classics, though these versions are digital re-recordings done years after hits like "My Girl," "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone," and "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)" last reached the charts. With no personnel list of any kind either, we have to presume that the vocalists were at one point members of the band. Still, it's amazing how close these versions are to the originals; the singers sound a bit older, and the backings are far too immaculate to date from the late '60s and early '70s, but they're done virtually note for note. Obviously, listeners looking for the hits they remember from the radio will want the original recordings, but this collection is an intriguing obscurity. ~ John Bush
