About the Author

Sartaj Aziz was born in Mardan, North-West Frontier Province, and raised in Peshawar and Abbottabad. Educated at Islamia College, Lahore, Hailey College of Commerce, Lahore, and Harvard University in USA, he has had a distinguished career as a civil servant in Pakistan in the Ministry of Finance and the National Planning Commission. In 1971 he started his international career as Director of the Commodities and Trade Division of the Food and Agriculture Organization
(FAO) in Rome and served as Deputy Secretary-General of the UN World Food Conference held in Rome in 1974. Between 1978 and 1984 he was Assistant President of the International Fund for Agricultural
Development (IFAD), an important UN agency he helped to create. He started his political career in April 1984 as Minister of State for Food and Agriculture until May 1988. From 1990 to 1993 he served as Minister for Finance and Economic Affairs, a position he rejoined from February 1997 to August 1998-when he took over as Minister for Foreign Affairs till October 1999. He has been a member of the Pakistan Senate from March 1985 to October 1999. In 2004, he started the fourth phase of his career
when he became Vice Chancellor of the Beaconhouse National University, a new private sector liberal art university at Lahore. His publications include, among others, Hunger, Politics and Markets
(1975), Rural Development: Learning from China (1978), Report of the National Commission on Agriculture (1988), Agricultural Policies for the 1990s (1990), Privatization in Pakistan (1996).
