A classic of naval warfare, this is a Royal Navy destroyer Captain's personal account of the grim struggle against the German U-boats in the Second World War as they attacked the Allied convoys in the harsh conditions of the North Atlantic. In four unrelenting years Captain Macintyre fought a dozen convoys through the 'wolf pack' blockade, captured Germany's greatest U-Boat commander and killed another famous ace in one single savage night, and survived the war as the Royal Navy's ace U-Boat Killer with seven U-Boats destroyed. In this book he traces the vital battle to run supplies through to Britain in its darkest hour, in a conflict which finally brought the German submarine service to its knees. This is a unique account of the Battle of the Atlantic which vividly captures the terror of the U-Boat campaign and its eventual defeat through the extraordinary experiences of one remarkable commander.
In 1926 Donald Macintyre was commissioned as a Sub-Lieutenant in the Royal Navy. Soon afterwards he joined the Fleet Air Arm and became a fighter pilot. In 1935 he was appointed as commander of the Kingfisher, the first of a new class of anti-submarine ships. Through the Second World War he served as the commander of destroyers, becoming the Royal Navy's ace U-Boat Killer. For his exploits he was awarded three DSOs and a DSC.
