Reviews

"A book which attempts much and achieves much. It has the paradoxical distinction of conjuring order and light from the shadows and uncertainties of a truly dark age." -- Antiquity
"A comprehensive archaeological and interpretive survey of the dark age...a study in which students of these formative centuries in Greek history will have an important handbook as well as find challenging ideas." -- American Journal of Archaeology
