Cusumano's work (``a modest revision of a doctoral thesis'') delineates and analyzes the development of the Japanese car industry by focusing on Nissan and Toyota. It is quite detailed, with a substantial amount of data presented in tabular form. The author considers various aspects of the industry: labor relations, manufacturing, quality control, and production management. He discusses, as well, the roles that managerial and technical skill, governmental policy, and timing have played in the success of the industry. This is a book for a sophisticated readership.
