About the Author

James A. Huston was a professor of history at Purdue University. He received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from Indiana University and his Ph.D. from New York University. A rifle-battalion operations officer with the 134th Infantry which fought in France in 1944-45, he also served with the Office of the Chief of Military History and the Office of the Chief of Army Field Forces, U.S. Army, and held the Ernest J. King Chair of Maritime History at the Naval War College, Newport, R.I. The author also wrote Combat History of the 134th Infantry, Biography of a Battalion, The Sinews of War: Army Logistics 1775-1953, and some fifty articles on military and foreign affairs.
