Alan Moorehead was born in Melbourne in 1910. Educated at Scotch College, Melbourne, and Melbourne University, he served as foreign correspondent of the Daily Express from 1936 to 1939, one of his first assignments being the Spanish Civil War. He received many literary prizes including the Sunday Times Book Prize and the Duff Cooper award for Gallipoli, and the Royal Society of Literature Award for Cooper's Creek. He was awarded the CBE in 1968 and died in 1983.
