Alicia Simpson is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute of Historical Research of the National Hellenic Research Foundation in Athens. Her research interests lie in the political, social, and cultural history of the Byzantine Empire in the tenth through twelfth centuries.
Simpson not only shows that Nicetas was a great historian but shows
the methods by which he became a great historian, beginning with an
initial version of his history that resembled other fine Byzantine
histories and then turning it into a masterpiece that surpassed
nearly all of them. Her book should bring his history more of the
attention it deserves ... [an] accomplished first book.
