This journal, the third of a four-volume work covering 1945-1985, provides an important and intimate insight into a remarkable man who fled Romania, lived in India and in Paris, settled in the United States, and became perhaps our greatest scholar of the history of religions, one who emphasized especially the relationship between ``primitive'' and localized religions and the so-called great religious traditions. In addition, Eliade was a talented writer of short stories, novellas, and novels--and of a two-volume autobiography whose premature ending in 1960 makes the journals all the more important. This journal records Eliade's thoughts about his own work, about other people, and about various aspects of culture, especially academic and religious culture. The style is lively and engaging.
