The first combat aircraft flew alone, scouting for armies and fighting each other using revolvers and rifles. Soon the aircraft entered pairs and then large formations. With supersonic technology, formations have returned to single numbers. Air warfare has come full circle.

About the Author

Air Vice-Marshal Johnson was the top scoring fighter pilot of World War Two. He also fought with the United States Air Force in Korea. He played an important part in the events he described, and knew most of the major figures of aerial combat. He is regarded as the greatest fighter pilot of them all.
