Julian Harrison is curator of medieval and earlier manuscripts at the British Library and coeditor of The Chronicle of Melrose Abbey. David M. Smith was formerly director of the Borthwick Institute of Historical Research and the editor of two volumes of The Heads of Religious Houses: England and Wales.
