About the Author

Clyde E. B. Bernhardt is a jazz trombonist and blues singer. Sheldon Harris is a freelance jazz journalist and author.

Reviews

Bernhardt's career has spanned almost the entire life of jazz. He began playing trombone in the 1920s, and played and sang during the 1930s and 1940s with King Oliver, Edgar Hayes, Jay McShann, and dozens of other groups. After semi-retirement in the 1960s, Bernhardt is again touring Europe and the United States. His is the story of many black musicians who spent hundreds of hours in buses to play dances throughout the country, and perfomed in Harlem clubs where they were barred from the audience. Count Basie's Good Morning Blues ( LJ 1/86) tells a similar story. Harris, author of Blues Who's Who , preserves Bernhardt's congeniality, humor, and colloquial speech in a portrait of a personality and an era. William Brockman, Drew Univ. Lib., Madison, N.J.
