About the Author

Shagdariin Sandag is the former director of the Institute of Oriental Studies and founder of the Center for Northeast Asian Studies of the Academy of Social Sciences of the Republic of Mongolia. His publications include a 20th century Mongolian history and monographs on the Mongolia's foreign policy and international relations. This work was written while he was a visiting scholar at the Institute of East Asian Studies at the University of California in Berkeley. Harry H. Kendall is research associate at the Institute of East Asian Studies and a retired Foreign Service Officer of the United States with many years experience in Asia.
