For the want of a nation - Herero polities on the eve of colonization; the Herero succession dispute, 1890-1894; Samuel Maharero as paramount chief of the Herero, 1894-1896; the curse of Kahimemua, 1897-1903; Ovita ovia Zurn, Zurn's war 1904-1908; the histories of the Old Testament teach us - the Herero, 1905-1914; this land is not yours, it is the property of America and the Herero - the Herero, 1915-1923.
This strikes me as an absolutely brilliant book. It is wonderfully
readable, profoundly fascinating, and admirably scholarly. It
should appeal not only to the great and rising generation of
historians of southern Africa, but also to historians with much
wider interests. Namibia has a peculiarly distinctive appeal for
being both part of the tradition of South African history, and also
distinctive from that tradition ... To a reader who is not an
expert on Namibia the book is elegantly illuminating.
