Winner of the 2012 Alfred Fagon Award for Best Black Playwright.
Michaela Coel: Since graduating from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in July 2012, Michaela has written and performed in the sell-out play Chewing Gum Dreams (The Yard/Bush Theatre), which earned her the Alfred Fagon Award for Best Black Playwright and a special performance on the Cottlesloe stage of the National Theatre in November, 2012. In 2013 Michaela starred in the 2011 Bruntwood Prize-winning play Three Birds by Janice Okoh (Royal Exchange Theatre and Bush Theatre).
Coel is by turns casually cruel, hilariously funny, naive, wise and
vulnerable. Her play tackles some difficult themes, including
sexual assault, violence, and underachievement across generations -
a serious new talent.
