Henry Louis Gates, Jr., is W. E. B. Du Bois Professor of
Humanities, Chair of African and African American Studies, and
Director of the W. E. B. Du Bois Institute for African and African
American Research at Harvard University. He has edited several

and the forthcoming African American National Biography. In
