About the Author

ROALD DAHL was born in 1916 in Wales of Norwegian parents. He was educated in England and went on to work for the Shell Oil Company in Africa, becoming an RAF fighter pilot when WWII began. He wrote his first children's story, JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH, in 1961 and everyone of his subsequent books became a bestseller. A World Book Day 2000 poll confirmed that Roald Dahl is still the nation's favourite author for both children and adults. QUENTIN BLAKE is one of Britain's most successful illustrators. His first drawings were published in Punch when he was sixteen. He has illustrated nearly three hundred books and he was Roald Dahl's favourite illustrator. He has many awards and prizes including the Whitbread Award and the Kate Greenaway Medal. He was awarded an OBE in 1988 and was the first ever Children's Laureate.

Reviews

An abbreviated version of Dahl's classic story takes to the pop-up stage, accompanied by Blake's scraggly pen-and-ink caricatures. Gatefolds, mini-booklets, and pop-ups reveal the major plot points of the story ("Two Golden Tickets Found Today!" shouts a headline on a foldout newspaper), with a towering glass elevator on the final spread. Smart use of interactive elements-many of which focus on the grim fates of Charlie's fellow ticket-holders-makes Wonka's already magical world feel even more so. Ages 7-up. (Oct.)
