Abraham (Bram) Stoker is a well-known Gothic author of the Victorian era. Bram Stoker was born in Ireland on November 8, 1847. Stoker was an athlete, journalist, author, biographer and theatre manager, Stoker is best known for his Gothic masterpiece Dracula (1897). Stoker's life is shrouded in mystery, from his rumored participation in occult circles, to his purported death from syphilis. Stoker graduated from Trinity College and entered the Irish Civil Service as Inspector of Petty Sessions. In 1876 Stoker met the actor Henry Irving and moved to London as manager of the Lyceum Theatre. There Stoker entered 'fashionable circles' and married Florence Balcombe. The Stokers had one child named Noel. Stoker was interested in the supernatural and the occult. Since childhood Stoker had been interested in Irish folklore, which included stories of bogeys and vampires. As an adult, Stoker had a fascination for Egyptology, Babylonian lore, astral projection, and alchemy - much like Sir Isaac Newton had had.
