Reviews

In this edition, updated by Weiner (Handbook of Psychology) and Craighead (Psychopathology), each signed article-organized alphabetically and one to three pages long-includes its own suggested readings and references. Some of the longer articles are broken down into subheadings (e.g., "Cognitive Theories of Affect" has five subheadings). Sixty-three biographies of psychology's "most distinguished persons" appear within the 1,189 articles, with another 543 brief biographies of "important contributors to psychological theory and research" at the end of Volume 4. The short biographies range from one to six lines, providing just enough information for the reader to identify the reason for that person's importance, and this reviewer was disappointed by their brevity. See and See also references appear within the table of contents, index, and at the end of each article. Both the author index and the nicely detailed subject index are located in Volume 4 and make information quickly and easily accessible to the reader. The 1,165 contributors listed at the front of each volume represent institutions from all over the globe, but more substantial information such as position/title and educational credentials would have been nice. BOTTOM LINE Current and comprehensive but brief technical articles make this most suitable for academic libraries. Purchase where needed.-Laurie Selwyn, formerly with Grayson Cty.
