Written with the absolute beginner in mind, this book teaches all the basics for learning to crochet with step-by-step instructions and photographs. Crocheting skills are learned by working on projects, beginning with something very easy and getting progressively more difficult as the reader works through the book. New skills are explored in depth as they are introduced. The introductory section covers all the basics of crochet-selecting yarn, hook types and sizes, other tools and accessories, crochet gauge, chaining, forming the basic stitches, reading patterns-making this the most comprehensive beginner's book available. The accompanying DVD includes a how-to video illustrating all the crochet techniques used to crochet the projects.
DEBORAH BURGER is the author of Crochet 101 and How to Make 100 Crochet Appliques. She learned to crochet from her grandmother at age 12. While she has found enjoyment in many fiber, textile and other art forms, crochet remains her lifelong favorite. She has been teaching crochet for more than 20 years, through Girl Scouting, various community centers, summer camps, at Charlotte's Fibers (a yarn shop in Western North Carolina), and the John C. Campbell Folk School. She is active in the online community, Ravelry, and has written articles and patterns for Interweave Crochet and the e-zines, Crochet Insider and Crochet Uncut. Deb and her musician/potter husband, Don, are the parents of seven grown children and have several grandchildren, most of whom also crochet. In addition to crochet, Deb enjoys knitting, embroidery, painting, fiber sculpture, gardening, performing folk music, and reading.
"Learn to crochet from a book? Yes, if it happens to be this one, written by a woman who learned the craft as a child and has since taught numerous beginners and enthusiasts alike. Like other books in the Look, Learn and Create series, which runs the gamut from origami to quilting, this one begins with basics. Burger then follows with instructions for 16 projects, each one designed to expand on a previously taught skill or to demonstrate a new one. From a very simple scarf, created by knotting together separate rows of chain stitch worked in different colors, to an intricately patterned cowl, to a pair of custom-fitted slippers, the book thoroughly prepares readers to pursue the craft. Full-color, close-up photos accompany step-by-step instructions, and text boxes heading each project allow crocheters to gather necessary materials beforehand and preview the skills they will learn by following the directions. The covered spiral binding may need reinforcement, but it's a bonus for crocheters, whose hands are already thoroughly occupied. Suggest Seamless Crochet, by Kristin Omdahl, and Custom Crocheted Sweaters, by Dora Ohrenstein, to those ready for more challenges." -- Booklist, December 15, 2012
