Professor Sir Michael Atiyah is acknowledged as one of the world's
greatest living mathematicians. He held the Savilian Chair of
Geometry at Oxford from 1963 until 1969 and was awarded the Fields
Medal during this period (in 1966). He is a former President of the
Royal Society, former Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, and was
the first Director of the Isaac Newton Institute for the
Mathematical Sciences. He remains active in mathematics and in 2013
opened
Oxford's new Mathematical Institute. He is currently Honorary
Professor at the University of Edinburgh.
"Those whose research is in the kind of mathematical physics Atiyah has worked on don't need to be told that this volume is important for them, but I would argue that it will also be of great interest to historians. Atiyah is one of the most significant figures in the mathematics of the late twentieth century, as witnessed by his Abel Prize in 2004. Anyone interested in the period will find valuable source material in the survey essays in this volume." --Fernando Q. Gouva, MAA Reviews
