The late Hayden surprised many with this 1976 volume by producing an absolutely first-rate Conradian sea adventure rather than the usual amateurish drivel written by movie stars. The book compares the treatment of the rich with that of the poor as it juxtaposes the journeys of the pampered daughter of a shipping titan and the crew aboard one of her father's barks. She has every luxury imaginable, while the swabs are overworked, terrorized by the brutal first mate, and live in quarters unfit for cattle. A wonderful historical page-turner with a social conscience. Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
