The above review is incredibly harsh on the film and I would like to clarify a couple of points.
The film is fantastic if you're a Silent Hill (of the games); the nuanced atmosphere of the games is there in spades along with significant nods to it, while being totally enjoyable by any who have no prior experience of Silent Hill. The above reviewer admits to not being into horror, instantly putting him/her at a predisposition to the film. It is a tightly wound film that, while suffering from flaws, is the all the richer for them and is a brilliantly enjoyable psychological horror.
I am the first to admit that it does not deserve the 5 stars I've given it, nor does it deserve the scathing 1 star above. 5 stars should be reserved for true classics but i feel the single star above needs to be weighed out...this film is a solid 3.5-4 stars in my books, some will agree, others won't. That's the nature of film. I just wish those attempting to review items would be reasonable with their ratings, there is nothing worse than someone with little appreciation of a genre or style and giving it a rubbish review because of it. 1 star reviews are for the *absolute lowest of the low*, a 2 would have been tolerable if you didn't enjoy it that much and a 3 for a film that obviously has been well done regardless of genre.
Ultimately, excellent film that will appeal to SH game fans more so than your average viewer, but is a solid 3-4 stars regardless. There are some ham-fisted lines delivered poorly here and there, some lower-budget effects shots (though for the most part it looks brilliant) and the film may be a little too obtuse for some (see above). But overall a fantastic film that everyone should give a go :)
