Performer Notes
  • This 1998 reissue contains 5 bonus tracks not on the original release.
  • All tracks have been digitally remastered.
  • Dury's one great album, so good that it overtakes major stars and million-selling supergroups. Dury portrayed the Essex man before Essex man was conceived, and brilliantly satirized it in 'Billericay Dickie' and 'Clevor Trever'. It is hard to imagine Dury the romantic, but there is a romantic in 'Wake Up And Make Love To Me' and 'I'm Partial To Your Abracadabra'; there is also sadness and regret in the beautiful 'My Old Man'. He should be remembered for his dynamite band the Blockheads and this necessary album - not his gold radio station albatross 'Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick'.
Professional Reviews
Q (5/02 SE, p.136) - Included in Q's "100 Best Punk Albums".

Q (6/00, p.65) - Ranked #66 in Q's "100 Greatest British Albums" - "...Part punk mayhem, part gallery of grotesques and part music hall funk. If James Brown had worked with Max Miller, they might have made this record..."

Uncut (p.136) - 5 stars out of 5 - "All of it as warmly exhilarating as anything thrown up by Tamla Motown..."

Mojo (Publisher) (p.131) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[R]emaining his most instantly enjoyable work."
