  • For the six years the Beatles were recording for Capitol Records, the Fab Four ascended to top of the American and British charts an astonishing 27 times. This single-disc compilation brings those hits together in one place to span every phase of the foursome's highly influential career. Early Merseybeat-flavored sides like "Love Me Do" (the band's first Stateside hit), "She Loves You," and "I Want To Hold Your Hand" struck a chord early on with hordes of screaming teens. Unfortunately, this found the band temporarily dismissed as mere teen idols despite these numbers coming as a result of the vaunted Lennon/McCartney songwriting partnership.
  • The timeless "Yesterday" struck a worldwide chord (and subsequently became one of the most played songs of all time) and Liverpool's favorite sons soon found themselves shifting gears. They were soon dabbling with flower power ("All You Need is Love"), character-driven storytelling ("Eleanor Rigby"), and allowing glimpses behind the Beatles curtain ("Hey Jude," "The Ballad of John & Yoko"). By the time "The Long and Winding Road" became the Beatles' chart-topping swan song, popular music's landscape had been permanently altered.

Being a Beatles compilation this is of course a superb set of songs, and they have been remastered and therefore better quality than the original 1987 digitisation of the master tapes. But this is only a taste of The Beatles, perhaps targeted for those unfamiliar with the most influential band in rock history. A collection of “Number 1s” cannot sum up a group who abandoned the prevailing orthodoxy of aiming solely for "number 1" hits (though of course that's how they initially won artistic freedom), and a group instrumental in making the 'album' an entity in itself with Rubber Soul, Revolver and Sgt Pepper's.

There are absences due to songs not having attained number 1 status in the US, notably 'Please Please Me' and 'Strawberry Fields Forever' which didn't achieve number 1 in the UK either due to being the other A-side to 'Penny Lane'. I'm also reminded that the flip-sides of the singles here were often as strong as the A-sides – e.g.'This Boy' ('I Want to Hold Your Hand'), 'She's a Woman' ('I Feel Fine'), 'I'm Down' ('Help'), 'Rain' ('Paperback Writer'), and 'Revolution' ('Hey Jude'). And on the other hand, 'Yesterday' appears here but was never released as a single in the UK – nonetheless it arguably deserves a place in any Beatles compilation.

While Beatles 1 covers the the full span of the The Beatles years, any fan will point out that much of their most important work is not represented: nothing from Rubber Soul, Sgt Pepper's or the White Album, and only a couple of tracks from Revolver. This stems largely because The Beatles preferred not to have already-released songs on albums, but means that as a compilation this misses most of The Beatles' most innovative and imaginative work, and therefore insight into why they were so influential.

Perhaps this compilation is to whet the appetite of new listeners to The Beatles for a more comprehensive exploration, but doesn't truly reflect their extraordinary range and innovative genius. It is, however, a representation of their chart success in a period of only 7 years. Ultimately, it is The Beatles' music - as fab now as ever!

A great compilation of the greatest roch band ever. It encompasses and good strech of their carreer with some golden oldies that everyones loves and bring back memories of days gone by. Very slick and great sound quaility, I very good represenation of the Beatles that all music lovers should have in their record collection,Paul and johns vocals are excellant, geroges lead guitar slick and rings drums servicable. But the overall sound is brilliant. this is a great present for young kids to introduce them to the brilliant liverpool lads.

As the title suggests this album contains all of the Beatles number one hits on a single CD. There is a large amount of great music, as would be expected of any album containing songs that reached number one on the charts. While there may be some great Beatles songs missing from this CD it is a great place to start for any aspiring Beatles fan.

If your after all the Beatles legendary hits in one place this CD is for you. How can you go wrong with an album that has pretty much every Beatles hit? You will not be disappointed if you purchase this CD and it will get a lot of time in your CD player.

I bought this CD mainly to play in our busy little corner store. The Beetles where my sisters era and being a child I had fond memories of the sound.

Well the response in the shop has been fantastic, although I cant say the same for our customers singing!! The amazing thing is this music doesnt seem to have a generation as all our customers are enjoying it. Even the dudes in black that play heavy metal music loved it and they were sincere!

So there you go listen, enjoy and dont be suprised if you have a smile on your face and hear some truely awesome/awefull sound that is your voice!

Obviously a collection of number one hits from what was probably the first superstar band ever is going to be a must have for the CD collection. The tracks are ordered chronologically and it is interesting to listen to their music mature as time progresses, orchestration becomes more complex and technology more advanced. Highly recommended.
