Calwyn, an almost-priestess, lived in the closed world of Antaris. When she found an injured man, Darrow, on their side of the ice wall she left with him pursuing destiny, adventure, freedom and perhaps even love. They gathered other companions on the way and set out to defeat evil magician Samis with their own magical abilities. Calwyn soon discovered she was something special, and in this third novel of a trilogy, she steps up to power unimaginable to the former bee singer. The focus here moves from a theme of women’s rights in The Singer of All Songs and The Waterless Seas to contemplate notions of empathy and cooperation between all—a direction not readily apparent in the first two books. Calwyn embraces reconciliation and is drawn into a highly erotic confrontation with Samis. If this had been intended for a general readership things might have got very interesting! The media release says ‘third and final book of the Chanters of Tremaris series’; can we believe such claims these days? Young Calwyn heals a world in a crescendo of dance—but the novel ends with a threat looming in the skies—I’m accepting bets on a further sequel.
