Hilburn (Undead in the City) launches a series about a psychologist who treats vampires, but drowns the intriguing premise in a cliche-strewn retread of good vampires clashing with bad vampires over possession of a desirable human female. When Denver shrink Dr. Kismet Knight takes on a young goth named Midnight who is mesmerized by a vampire coven, the stage is set for an examination of the "scary occult sensationalism" of the undead. What unfolds, however, is an overwrought love triangle of Kismet, smokin' hot vampire leader Devereux, and Alan Stevens, an FBI agent investigating recent killings in the area. As Midnight describes Kismet as a cross between Megan Fox and Angelina Jolie, Devereux performs a super-sexy dance number as a protective spell, and warring covens provide a purely conventional backdrop for vampire orgies, it's never clear whether Hilburn is satirizing the genre, mocking its readers, or just missing the mark. Psychologist Kismet Knight's new patient Midnight has discovered the vampire world at a club called The Crypt. This teenager was enthralled with the head undead, Devereux, a handsome hunk by anyone's standards. When the skeptical Kismet meets Devereux, the instantaneous lustful attraction astounds her. His enticing voice and mesmerizing eyes threaten to overwhelm her. Into this mix enters FBI agent Alan Stevens who is almost as good-looking and alluring as Devereux. And as it turns out, Alan has been looking into bizarre murders where victims have been totally drained of their blood. He knows the victims were dispatched by vampires-real vampires. Denial is a strong emotion to which Kismet clings. Not until she is abducted by an overpowering evil and left to die in a chamber of horrors does she begin to concede there might be something to this other reality. Verdict This debut urban fantasy by a psychotherapist is by turns funny, charming, romantic, and scary. Fans of vampire fiction and paranormal romances will enjoy this series launch.-Patricia Altner, Biblioinfo.com, Columbia, MD (c) Copyright 2012.
