H.P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) is generally acknowledged as the most important American writer of macabre fiction since Edgar Allan Poe and one of the most influential writers of horror tales in the twentieth century. He is best known for stories featuring a mythology of otherworldly monsters that has become known as the Cthulhu Mythos. Over the past century, hundreds of writers of horror and fantasy, from Neil Gaiman to Stephen King, have contributed works to the Cthulhu Mythos.
