Gr 7-9‘A literate selection of haunting stories with a strong British emphasis and many well-known authors. M. R. James's "A School Story" is a shivery account of murder at an English public school. "Bubbling Well Road" by Rudyard Kipling tells about a demon-infested trail in colonial India. Classic and modern American writers are included as well. Truman Capote's eerie "Miriam" is the ultimate unwelcome guest. Mark Twain's retelling of "The Woman with the Golden Arm" reflects the story's African-American roots. Other tales range from ghost stories to folktales to science fiction, and vary in tone from chilling terror to gentle, tender nostalgia. Most of these selections have been previously anthologized. Some, such as Saki's "The Open Window," have appeared many times. However, this collection will be appreciated by readers who prefer strong writing and literary suspense to cookie-cutter horror series.‘Elaine E. Knight, Lincoln Elementary Schools, IL
