Reviews

'...offers both a profound assessment of Asia's economies in difficulties, and sets out...clear prescriptions, which the crisis creates the opportunity to implement...It is an essential read, not just for understanding the turbulence of the last few years which shock the world economy to its core, but for preparing for what may lay ahead.' - Kenneth S. Courtis, Chief Economist and Strategist, Deutsche Bank Group Asia Pacific 'This book is a must-read for those who are involved with Asia. It is well written by contributors who live and breathe in the region.' - Kriengsak Niratpattanasai, Vice President, DBS Thai Danu Bank 'A very good read! Dr Richter successfully offers a set of broad and deep perspectives on East Asia's economic development as well as very insightful strategic options for companies operating in this complicated, fast-changing region.' Edward Tse, Vice President, Booz-Allen & Hamilton 'A balanced and illuminating set of essays about the past and the evolving new premises underlying the development models of post crisis contemporary Southeast Asia, with a particular attention to new directions of the Korean chaebol, the Japanese keiretsu and the Chinese overseas networks. A very important contribution to the understanding of the South East pole of the global economy in the millennium.' - Howard V. Perlmutter, Emeritus Professor of Social Architecture and Management, and Director, Emerging Global Civilization Project, University of Pennsylvania 'This book is a most vivid account of the recent Asian monetary disturbances. I recommend it to statesmen, economists, and all persons having interest in Asian economies.' - Takafusa Nakamura, Professor of Economics, Tokyo University 'The East Asian Development Model is a stimulating, wide-ranging, and ambitious attempt to draw lessons from the Asian financial disaster of the 1990s...Debates about the roots and nature of Asia's economic evolution will continue, but all sides to the debate will find useful material here.' - James Fallows, editor of The Industry Standard '...comprehensive, insightful and intellectually stimulating...required reading for Asian government officials and business leaders already operating or planning to invest in Asia.' - Edgar G. Hotard, President H & J International and retired President and Chief Operating Officer of Praxair Inc. ' This new edited book adds substantially to our knowledge of the East Asian Development Model. Its specialist chapters contribute many useful insights in the recent economic and financial crisis in the region, as well as casting a critical eye over the much of the received wisdom in this area. It can be recommended not only to academics but also to policy-makers and practitioners' - Malcolm Warner, University of Cambridge 'Faced with the global standard argument based on the hegemonic Neo-liberalist ideology, management scholars have to take seriously the issue of whether there is no alternative to the American style politico-economic system. This book is a highly useful material to examine systematically the merits and problems of the Asian development model as a viable alternative.' - Professor Sei Chull Oh, President, The Korean Academic Society of Business Administration
