Pierce, a staff writer at the Boston Globe Sunday Magazine, tackles the more conventional topic of three-time Super Bowl quarterback Tom Brady, but he crafts his story distinctively. He uses the New England Partriots's challenging 2005 season as a filter through which Brady's life is passed. Pierce relies on extensive interviews with Brady's family, friends, teammates, and coaches; less predictably, he takes a highly analytical view of him as representative of such values as teamwork, loyalty, and community, underpinning that evaluation with a diverse set of allusions, including Vatican II and a 1908 philosophical treatise on loyalty by Josiah Royce.
