Every major athlete has a story to tell, but only a few transcend the banality of sports. Hank Aaron's I Had a Hammer was such a book, and Armstrong's Every Second Counts is another. Armstrong happens to be a five-time winner of the Tour de France; he relishes life and enthusiastically makes the most of every opportunity, but his experience with cancer still haunts him. His sanctuary is with other sufferers and their families. He is a complicated and obsessive individual who does not accept convenient reasons for why he survived when others have not. Stephen Hoye captures these qualities with a taut but touching narration. This journey of personal deliverance deserves a place in our libraries. Most highly recommended.-Ray Vignovich, West Des Moines P.L. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
