Koestenbaum's highly regarded biography makes its way onto tape courtesy of the excellent narration of Arthur Addison. The author is trying to convince listeners that Warhol was a serious artist and not the con artist that most of us think of him as. He does this by focusing on Warhol's films, which have been for the most part unavailable since their initial release. This is all well and good, but since we haven't seen any of the films, Koestenbaum's long-winded discussion of Warhol's "duality" seem a little pointless; we have no frame of reference. While this is obviously an erudite and groundbreaking study of the artist, it does not seem to translate well to audio. In addition, Warhol's best work seems to skirt the edges of pornography.
