Eugene Victor Wolfenstein is Professor of Political Science at the University of California at Los Angeles and from 1988 to 2002 was a member of the faculty of the Southern California Psychoanalytic Institute. "Political theorists have only recently begun to give W. E. B. Du Bois's work the careful and close readings it deserves. Victor Wolfenstein's detailed and subtle interpretation of The Souls of Black Folk is a major contribution to this new and welcome trend, and with great insight makes the case for the value of a sustained, psychoanalytic reading of Du Bois's great book."-Robert Gooding-Williams, University of Chicago
