URIEL WEINREICH (1926–1967) was a professor of linguistics and Atran Professor of Yiddish Language, Literature, and Culture at Columbia University. His books include the classic textbook College Yiddish and Languages in Contact, renowned in the field of bilingual studies. An expert on the dialects of Yiddish, he was founder and director of the monumental Language and Culture Atlas of Ashkenazic Jewry.
