Reviews

...highly readable and instructive...Barthel has created a creditable piece of work that reveals much about Ducky Medwick the man, more than enough about the details of Medwick's baseball achievements, and a very good feel for the world of the ball player in an earlier time. Aethlon: Journal of Sports Literature The bulk of this biography carefully details Medwick's Cardinal career and credentials, especially 1934 through 1939 when he was the main cog in the Cardinals' potent attack. According to Barthel, those years alone should have been enough to gain Medwick an early spot in Cooperstown. He was the only player (other than Wagner, Musial, and Mize) to lead the NL in extra-base hits for three straight years. He is still the Cardinal leader in doubles and runs batted in; he also finished in the NL top five in twelve offensive categories a total of seventy-seven times. Elysian Fields Quarterly Is the book worth it? A very definite yes! Atom Tabloid and Citizen Gazette
