About the Author

For 11 years, until 1970, Abdel Magid Farid served as Secretary-General of the Egyptian Presidency, with the rank of minister and attended all of Gamal Abdel Nasser's meetings on domestic and international affairs. During this time, he was sent on sensitive missions to Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Algeria and Morocco. After Nasser's death in 1970 he left the government service to act as adviser to the Algerian Presidency. Since 1979 he has been Chairman of the Board of the Arab Research Centre in London, and in early 1993 he was elected Vice-Chairman of the Council for the Advancement of Arab-British Understanding (CAABU) in London.

Reviews

* "It is extremely illuminating to hear Nasser speak his own private words, edited and contextualised by Farid, but not filtered or narrated anecdotally the way they have been in prior works... With publication of this unique text, Farid has made a valuable contribution to our efforts to assess the man and his ongoing influence.", International Journal of Middle East Studies * " - these startling transcripts both round out the character of a charismatic figure and go far to setting the record straight on his final years", Middle East Quarterly * " - a fascinating, often surprising vision of thinking at the apex of Egyptian politics in the period 1967-70", Middle East Quarterly
