About the Author

Before retiring in 1997. Michael Hogan taught Australian politics and society in the Department of Government at the University of Sydney for twenty years. He has written or edited more than a dozen books, including Public versus Private Schools: Funding and Directions in Australia (Penguin, 1984); The Sectarian Strand: Religion in Australian History (Penguin, 1987); and Local Labor: A History of the Labor Party in Glebe 1891-2003 (Federation, 2004). He is a member of the committee set up by Premier Bob Carr to promote historical research in preparation for the celebration of the 'Sesquicentanary of Responsible Government in New South Wales 1856-2006'.
