Reviews

’As is true of other works published by the Hakluyt Society, Lorimer's edition also includes a wealth of other material: an excellent introduction, bibliography, and index; several maps and reproductions; an exhaustive examination of typographical variations among the six states of the first edition of Ralegh's text and a full publication history of other editions; and six appendices filled with manuscript sources that shed light on Ralegh's experiences, on other contemporary voyages to Guiana, and on the reception of his work.’ Itinerario ’Joyce Lorimer's edition for the Hakluyt Society marks the first appearance of that manuscript in print, helpfully paired page for page with the text of the 1595 edition, and accompanied by a seventy-nine-page introduction, several admirably clear maps, and six valuable appendices of previously unpublished documents.’ The Library ’Sir Walter Ralegh's Discoverie of Guiana is both a valuable scholarly resource and a resourceful teaching tool, and therefore an indispensable addition to any and every academic library.’ Renaissance Quarterly ’Specialists in Elizabethan travel narratives, new historicist literary approaches, and early modern textual artefact, interpretation, and publication will find this to be a valuable edition, particularly when it is used in concert with the many similar and relevant volumes produced by the Hakluyt Society.’ International Journal of Maritime History ’One cannot help but be impressed by the extent of Lorimer's editorial labors and the magisterial nature of her lengthy introduction to the texts. It is quite an accomplishment.’ Sixteenth Century Journal
