Anthony Grayling is Reader in Philosophy at Birkbeck College, London. He has published many books, most recently a biography of Hazlitt and a collection of essays. Andrew Pyle is Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Bristol.
"This is an impressive sweep of philosophy as it has taken
residence in Britain. The pricing may be prohibitive for smaller
colleges, especially those not supporting a philosophy program, but
for larger universities that do, especially those offering courses
in the history of philosophy or Continental thought, this is
indispensable."--Sanford Lakoff
"This new encyclopedia takes a very broad view of philosophy.
Alongside philosophers, like A.J Ayer, it treats the political
thought of the Jacobean divine Lancelot Andrewes, the social
concerns of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and 19th-century
periodicals. Consequently, it is best understood as a guide to
British intellectual history from the Middle ages to the present.
Following the preface and the introduction are a section titled
"How to Use the Encyclopedia" and a list of contributors,
international in scope. Four volumes of A-Z entries, with their
bibliographies and cross-references, follow. The fourth volume
concludes with an alphabetical index. From Catholicism to the
philosophical and mathematical contributions of Lewis Carroll
(Charles Lutwidge Dodgson), no topic is ignored. Due attention is
given to universities, societies and means of publications. The
entries are lucid and well written. All of these features make this
encyclopedia very desirable."--Sanford Lakoff
