About the Author

Ann Oakley is Professor of Sociology and Social Policy and Director of the Social Science Research Unit at the Institute of Education, University of London. She has published many books, most recently Experiments in Knowing and Gender on Planet Earth. She is also Richard Titmuss's daughter and literary executor and has co-edited two earlier reissues of his work, The Gift Relationship and Welfare and Wellbeing, as well as a book about her parents' early work, Man and Wife. Jonathan Barker is a sociologist and consumer researcher who has focused on issues of social and health policy and has conducted research on ageing and later life. Currently director of Far-sight Research, his published works include Black and Asian Older People in Britain and Our Future Elders.
