About the Author

Archibald Lewis (1914–1990) received his Ph.D. degree at Princeton University. He has had works published in journals such as Speculum, Le Moyen Age, and Polish Review. Among his books are Naval Power and Trade in the Mediterranean A.D. 500–1100 and The Northern Seas A.D. 300–1100.
