About the Author

Gillian Tindall is a historian and novelist. Among her many acclaimed books are City of Gold: The Biography of Bombay and Countries of the Mind: The Meaning of Place to Writers that are being reissued in Faber Finds. Her latest book is Footprints in Paris: A Few Streets, a Few Lives.

Reviews

In this critical work, Tindall investigates the role of place in several 19th- and 20th-century novels, focusing on major writers from England and France such as Hardy, Dickens, Waugh, and Proust. Actual landscapes are not as important as the ``literary uses to which places are put, the meanings they are made to bear, the roles they play when they are re-created in fiction, and the psychological journeys for which they are destinations.'' Tindall's research brings a new perspective to location in the novel, notably her treatment of the journey in both its physical and psychological dimensions. This book will interest writers as well as readers, although its appeal will be greatest for those familiar with the novels discussed.-- Nancy R. Ives, SUNY at Geneseo
